Book Review: The Last Stand of The New York Institute by Cassandra Clare, Sarah Rees Brennan and Maureen Johnson

The ninth novella in The Bane Chronicles

Pages: 40

Published: 2013

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Sypnosis from Goodreads:

Magnus meets Valentine in battle as the Circle attacks the Downworlders of New York City.

In the time of the Uprising, Valentine’s Circle goes after Downworlders in New York…and the Shadowhunters of the Institute must decide whether to join him, or fight with Magnus and his kind. This is the first time Magnus sees Jocelyn, Luke, and Stephen—but not the last. It is not long before Jocelyn seeks him out…
My review:

This was yet another perfect addition to The Bane Chronicles, honestly: the time jump was perfect and honestly it answered a lot of questions I had when reading City of Bones.

Without being too spoilery, the last stand takes place before City of Bones, and we get an insight into a lot of familiar faces before we properly get to know them; I’m talking Maryse Lightwood, Lucien Graymark, Jocelyn and of course Valentine, who we can really see his intensity and utter ruthlessness.

Magnus however remains his perfect self, no bias whatsoever, but honestly his attitude is understandable and the authors continue to do an amazing job getting his emotions to seep through the pages. Especially at the last part, where he’s with a dear friend of his (not going to say who but oh my gosh I was so happy to see what happened play out!) and this amazing duo is asked a very important request by Jocelyn. For my fellow Shadowhunters, you know what I mean.

And this was the novella we needed.

And so it begins! Perfection! I actually had chills as it felt like I had come full circle; utterly amazing, and although I have two novellas left, I’ll definitely read these again.

And that concludes my review, until next time, happy reading,

Brooklyn 🙂
