Book Review: City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare

Book 5 in The Mortal Instruments series

Published: 2012

Pages: 542

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Sypnosis from Goodreads:

The New York Times bestselling Mortal Instruments continues—and so do the thrills and danger for Jace, Clary, and Simon.

What price is too high to pay, even for love? When Jace and Clary meet again, Clary is horrified to discover that the demon Lilith’s magic has bound her beloved Jace together with her evil brother Sebastian, and that Jace has become a servant of evil. The Clave is out to destroy Sebastian, but there is no way to harm one boy without destroying the other. As Alec, Magnus, Simon, and Isabelle wheedle and bargain with Seelies, demons, and the merciless Iron Sisters to try to save Jace, Clary plays a dangerous game of her own. The price of losing is not just her own life, but Jace’s soul. She’s willing to do anything for Jace, but can she still trust him? Or is he truly lost?
Love. Blood. Betrayal. Revenge. Darkness threatens to claim the Shadowhunters in the harrowing fifth book of the Mortal Instruments series.
My Thoughts (slight spoilers):

I really enjoyed the pacing of this book, I thought that there was a steady beat throughout building up to some insane climax and lots of drama throughout, and I totally felt that; there was so much forboding throughout and it was so unnerving waiting to find out what happened next.

Sebastian is pure evil, in my opinion; yes he was trained by Valentine to be a soldier but honestly he is so mechanical and reminded me a lot of Tom Riddle aka Voldemort!! Zero humanity and full ruthlessness. But you know what? I’m freaking proud of Clary for standing up to him! She’s so loyal to Jace and she has such undying love for him, it’s honestly one of my favourite things about her; and I love her blooming friendship throughout with Izzy; who had some kick ass scenes and I was cheering all the way. I loved all the Magnus and Alec feels in this book and I just wanted everyone to be happy and everything! I love how Simon had such an important role to play in this book; honestly, all of the characters have developed so much! It’s amazing, and I love how Clare portrays these favourites and introduces new faces; and I love the connections between The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices; the references are epic and every time Brother Zachariah came into this book I was a puddle of emotions; I still have so many questions about lots of things in this book; but I know they will surely get answered in the next and final book!

Clare has definitely cemented her place as one of my favourite authors of all time, every book of hers and both series are in my all time favourites list / Goodreads shelf, and everything is just amazing about her books and writing. Nothing is forced or fake, everything feels natural and real, her writing projects the reader into her world and we feel like we’re there every single moment, experiencing things and emotions as the characters do! Every page held a different emotion and honestly I feel so mixed about so many things in this book! I loved the constant angst, word building and atmosphere; I couldn’t anticipate what would happen next. It was absolutely amazing and I could keep ranting about the epicness that is this series; but I’m honestly thinking and feeling so much after finishing this book so I’ll leave it there, but honestly cannot wait to read the last book in this series! The Shadowhunter world is one I never want to leave, I’m so excited to read Clare’s other books. There’s no words for their perfection and magic to be honest; I can see myself re reading all her books often. Okay, I promise I’ll stop now 😉

And that concludes my review, until next time, happy reading 🙂
